Lagos: Having an ambition to be governor not a sin – Obasa

House of Assembly passes bill banning the police from parading suspects

In a press briefing at his home in Lagos on Saturday, Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, stated that it is not wrong to have ambitions of becoming the governor of Lagos in 2027. He challenged state leaders to reveal when and where he had indicated his desire to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“Having an ambition to become a governor is not a sin. However, I said on the floor of the house when the budget was presented that I had no thoughts of governorship but that does not mean I am not qualified or that I lack experience and I still maintain that.

“I’m still the speaker until the right thing has been done,” Obasa said.

Obasa criticized the militarization of the assembly complex during his impeachment process and emphasized that he was removed from his position in his absence while he was out of the country. His removal took place on Monday, January 13, 2025, with more than two-thirds of the legislative house voting him out over allegations of misconduct.

Following his removal, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first female to hold the position in the South-West state.
