Nigerian singer and producer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has sparked debate on social media with a bold claim about his impact on the music industry.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the self-styled Akpako Master bragged that he was the first to give Nigerian musicians the confidence to smoke cannabis openly on screen.
His post read:
“No hard feelings, it’s all love, but no forget say if no be my sacrifice, none of your fav go get liver to smoke Igbo for screen.”
Terry G’s statement stirred mixed reactions online, with many users pointing out that legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti had openly smoked cannabis on stage and on screen decades before Terry G’s rise to fame.
While some fans praised Terry G’s daring style and influence in the late 2000s, others dismissed his claims as exaggerated, citing long-standing practices in Nigerian music culture
