“It Is Time to Move” – Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno Defects from PDP to APC, Cites Development and Federal Alignment

Umo Eno

In a major political realignment, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defection was announced on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the Government House in Uyo, with several APC governors and top party leaders in attendance.

The move marks a significant shift in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape, long considered a PDP stronghold.

“It Is Time to Move” – Governor Eno

Explaining his decision, Governor Eno stated:

“It is time to move. After wide consultations with stakeholders across the state and beyond, I have decided to align Akwa Ibom with the government at the center for the sake of our people. This is about development, unity, and progress — not personal interest.”

He emphasized that his defection is aimed at enabling the state to benefit more directly from federal government programs, infrastructure projects, and economic initiatives under the APC-led administration.

Mixed Reactions Trail Defection

While the APC camp in Akwa Ibom and at the national level welcomed the governor with open arms, the announcement has sparked mixed reactions across political and public circles.

Former PDP National Legal Adviser Emmanuel Enoidem publicly criticized the defection, accusing the governor of betraying the mandate of the party and vowing that the PDP would remain a formidable opposition in the state.

Security was visibly tightened at the venue, and the event—originally intended to be a large public celebration—was scaled down due to the Muslim Sallah holiday.

Political Implications

Governor Umo Eno’s defection is expected to reshape the power dynamics in Akwa Ibom and further strengthen APC’s influence in the South-South region. It could also affect the state’s relationship with federal authorities, budget allocations, and developmental partnerships moving forward.

This development follows a growing trend of high-profile defections as political figures across the country recalibrate their alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
