Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has announced an indefinite ban on masquerade displays across the state, citing escalating attacks linked to criminals operating under the guise of traditional performances.
Governor Eno, who issued the directive during a state function, said the prohibition became necessary following multiple violent incidents where individuals disguised as masquerades reportedly terrorised residents in various communities.
“By my office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, I’m issuing an order. Anyone caught will be arrested and tried. They have been using it to cause trouble in some local government areas,” he said.
Umo Eno further directed the Commissioner of Police and all security agencies to strictly enforce the ban, warning that no offender would be spared.
“I’m now, as Chief Security Officer of the state, directing the Commissioner of Police and other heads of security agencies to arrest and prosecute anyone caught,” he declared.
Governor Umo Eno urged citizens to prioritise peace and reject activities that compromise public safety.
“Let’s stop terrorising people. Let people have peace… it is hereby banned. No more,” he added.
The governor’s announcement follows recent concerns raised by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command over the emergence of “suspected criminal masquerades.”
Commissioner of Police Baba Azare confirmed that several suspects have already been arrested in connection with such incidents and are currently undergoing prosecution.
