Buhari was determined to crush Boko Haram – Buratai

‘I’m not running for president in 2023,’ Buratai assures Nigerians

“He Was Clear About Defeating Boko Haram” — Ex-Army Chief Buratai Remembers Buhari’s Leadership in War Against Insurgency

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), has paid tribute to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a resolute and mission-driven commander-in-chief who prioritized Nigeria’s security throughout his presidency.

Speaking in Katsina on Tuesday, ahead of the burial ceremony in Daura, Buratai recalled Buhari’s unwavering commitment to tackling Boko Haram and other threats to national security, especially during his tenure as Army Chief from 2015 to 2021.

“President Buhari was a commander-in-chief who was clear about his mission to defeat Boko Haram. He gave firm instructions and trusted me to execute them effectively,” Buratai said.

The retired general, who also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin Republic, said Buhari’s leadership style was marked by directness and trust, allowing the military to operate with clarity and urgency.

“He was a result-oriented leader. Even before it became widespread, he foresaw that the Northwest could become another epicenter of insecurity after the Northeast, and he acted quickly based on intelligence,” he added.

Buratai, who worked closely with Buhari during the height of Nigeria’s insurgency crisis, said the late president made security a cornerstone of his administration, despite the complex nature of the threats Nigeria faced.

Joining other top officials and dignitaries awaiting Buhari’s final journey home in Daura, Buratai praised the late leader for his military background, discipline, and vision.

“We thank God for his life. He has left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire us, especially in the military, where he served with honour and commitment,” he said.

President Buhari, who served as a Major General in the Nigerian Army before becoming Head of State and later a two-term civilian president, passed away on Sunday in London. He will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State on Tuesday.
