Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has paid a heartfelt tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a political mentor and a patriotic leader who stood for Nigeria both in times of war and peace.

Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a clinic in London after a prolonged illness. His death has continued to draw condolences from across the country and beyond.

Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, El-Rufai reflected on their longstanding political relationship, revealing that Buhari played a pivotal role in shaping his career and rise to political prominence.

“I mourn the departure of President Muhammadu Buhari. He was a leader who stood up for our country in war and peace,” El-Rufai wrote.

He recalled how Buhari personally encouraged him to join the governorship race in Kaduna State back in 2014 and offered unwavering support throughout his campaign and eventual victory.

“President Buhari was my political mentor. He nudged me to contest for the governorship of Kaduna State, encouraged me by attending the flag-off of my campaign in November 2014, and stood by me to victory,” he added.

El-Rufai also recounted their time working together in the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), where Buhari appointed him to lead the party’s Renewal Committee after the 2011 elections.

“I had the privilege of working with him in the CPC… I am profoundly grateful for his support during my tenure as governor and for the remarkable access he afforded me, even during rare moments of disagreement on policy matters.”
