Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has stirred backlash online after making a scathing comment in response to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a viral video shared shortly after the announcement of Buhari’s passing, Portable referenced the tragic events of the 2020 #EndSARS protest at the Lekki Toll Gate, accusing the late president of playing a role in the violence that left many Nigerians traumatized.
“The man that said they should shøot our people at the Lekki Toll Gate is de*d. Let us do good. May he d!e again in Heaven,” the singer said.
Portable’s statement, seen by many as deeply insensitive, has sparked mixed reactions across social media. While a small number of users echoed his sentiments over the unresolved issues surrounding the #EndSARS protests, others condemned the artist for his lack of decorum and empathy, especially in a moment of national mourning.
Former President Buhari, who died in London at the age of 82, had faced widespread criticism over the handling of the 2020 protests, during which security forces were accused of using lethal force on unarmed demonstrators demanding police reform.
As of press time, Portable has not issued a follow-up statement or clarification, despite growing calls for him to retract his words.
