Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has taken a firm swipe at politicians who pledge to serve only one term in office, saying such individuals should undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Soludo, who made the fiery remarks on Saturday during a political rally in Anambra South, questioned the logic behind promising just one term, insisting that the Nigerian Constitution provides for two terms, not one.
“How can anybody with a functioning brain say that? Do you think you’re speaking to fools?”
“You come to people and say you will do only one term — any politician who says that must be sent to a psychiatric home because the person must have some mental problem,” Soludo said to a cheering crowd.
Context: One-Term Debate Heats Up
Soludo’s comments come in response to growing political discourse surrounding the idea of a single-term presidency or governorship — a position recently embraced by prominent figures like Peter Obi and Governor Seyi Makinde.
-
In July, Peter Obi, former Anambra Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, said he was willing to serve a single four-year term in the spirit of equity and zoning.
-
Likewise, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State advocated for a constitutional amendment that would limit elected officials to a single six-year term.
Obi argued that four years is enough for a sincere and visionary leader to implement impactful governance, citing the need to honor regional power rotation.
“I don’t need a day more than four years. I will show the direction of good governance,” Obi said during a Channels TV interview.
Soludo’s Second-Term Ambition
Governor Soludo, whose first term will conclude in 2026, is already making moves toward securing a second term — and his speech at the Anambra South rally made that clear.
His critics may view his outburst as a strategic defense of his political ambition, while supporters believe he’s speaking hard truths about the dangers of populist rhetoric in Nigerian politics.
