The Federal Government has officially launched the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen regional integration, enhance identity management, and improve security across West Africa.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Friday in Abuja under the theme: “ENBIC: Enhancing Regional Integration and Security.”
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the introduction of the card aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for efficient border management and a more secure region.
“The card provides the foundation for more efficient identification across borders, a crucial component in combating insecurity,” the minister stated.
Tunji-Ojo noted that the rollout process began 11 years ago but has now been fully actualised under the current administration. Nigeria becomes the seventh ECOWAS member state to deploy the biometric identity card.
He added that the ENBIC initiative marks a significant step toward better migration management and will support safer and more coordinated movement within the sub-region.
