The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh.
The development occurred during plenary on Thursday, as broadcast live on Channels Television. The session was presided over by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule.
During the sitting, the Majority Leader of the House, Major Jack, formally read the notice of allegations and claims of gross misconduct leveled against Governor Fubara. According to the lawmakers, the alleged actions contravene provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
A total of 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly signed the notice initiating the impeachment process.
Speaker Amaewhule stated that the notice of allegations would be formally served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, in line with constitutional procedures.
In a related development, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, Linda Stewart, read out a separate notice of allegations and claims of gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Ngozi Oduh, marking the formal commencement of impeachment proceedings against her as well.
Further steps in the process are expected to follow after the notices are duly served on the affected officials.
